No More Empty Pots (NMEP) is a grassroots non-profit corporation that connects individuals and groups to improve self-sufficiency, regional food security and economic resilience of urban and rural communities through advocacy and action. No More Empty Pots’ vision is to support communities in becoming more self-sufficient, food secure and economically resilient through collaboration and adhering to our core values of education, stewardship and sustainability.

NMEP is developing the Collaborative Community Centered Food Hub, an integrated space to demonstrate the interdependent nature of the food system in one location from production to distribution, processing, consumption and recycling that will provide job readiness training, living wage jobs, reduce food waste and build businesses with recurring revenue. The food hub is a $4.0 million multi-use project based in North Omaha.

Position Description |  Youth Culinary Instructor

NMEP offers youth culinary training programs and is looking for an energetic, committed instructor to lead culinary instruction classes.  Program participants aged 6 to 18 engage in hands-on instruction in a licensed commercial kitchen. The instructor must be able to engage, enlighten and enhance the learning experiences of a diverse range of students. The instructor is expected to facilitate a currently developed program curriculum. The instructor is expected to use a computer for communication and daily work, including email and Google Suite..

Expected culinary skills that have been developed in culinary classes or on-the-job training in a professional kitchen include:
  • Professional level knife skills
  • Basic cooking techniques (for example, saute, roast, braise, etc.)
  • Food safety and sanitation practices and regulations, for food handling and kitchen maintenance
  • Current Serv-Safe certification
Expected Teaching Skills:
  • Ability to meet the students where they are, equitably communicating with and educating all students regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or social background.
  • Effectively manage a classroom with diverse students.
  • Ability to work with and direct volunteers/assistants
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to set up cooking stations for student engagement and pacing.
  • Ability to work within a structured time-frame to ensure the class proceeds from introduction through recipe completion/consumption within scheduled time.
  • Engage in the evaluation process through data collection instruments and practices
  • Flexible and able to adapt quickly and calmly to changes
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to move around a kitchen in order to evaluate food preparation stations, interact with students
Experience Preferred:
  • Culinary School degree (2-year minimum), or 2-3 years experience in a professional kitchen.
  • Experience instructing/teaching culinary arts classes, particularly with children.
  • Experience developing/adapting recipes and programming preferably for youth
  • Work experience as an employee or volunteer in gardening/cooking/youth development programs

Working Conditions:
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation or access to reliable transportation as local travel is required.
  • Opportunity for flexible schedule; must be available weekdays. Some evenings and weekend hours are expected.
Wages & Hours:
  • This is a part-time position and approximately 25 hours per week. Hourly pay commensurate with experience.
